History |
Kwansei Gakuin
University was founded in 1889 by Reverend Walter Russell
Lambuth, M.D., an American missionary sent by the Methodist
Episcopal Church, South.@Dr. Lambuth was a man whose
vision encouraged thousands, as he established schools
and hospitals across China, Korea, and Japan.@One of
his legacies in the Kansai area of Japan has grown into
today's Kwansei Gakuin.@Kwansei Gakuin was originally
located in Harada-no-mori, an eastern suburb of the
international port city of Kobe.@This private school
was inaugurated with nineteen students and ten teachers
with the purpose of providing general education and
training for ministers.
In 1910 the Canadian Methodist Church and the Japanese
Methodist Church joined in its operation.@Kwansei Gakuin
then became an institution with departments of Theology,
Humanities, Commerce, and a Middle School. In 1929 the
growing institution of Kwansei Gakuin moved east to
the rural Uegahara farmland which is the site of the
present main campus in Nishinomiya.@In 1932, it officially
established a full degree-granting university.@In 1948,
the country embraced a new school system based upon
the American educational framework that included a curriculum
of six years in elementary school, three years in junior
high school, three years in senior high school, and
four years in college.
In 1995, Kwansei Gakuin opened its Kobe-Sanda Campus
for the newly-established School of Policy Studies in
the Sanda area.@In 2001, the School of Science moved
to the new campus before expanding into the School of
Science and Technology in 2002 |
